Privacy Policy
Effective: August 19, 2026 · Last updated: August 19, 2026
The short version: Write On transcribes your speech on your Mac. Your audio and your transcripts never reach us — there is no account, no server, and no telemetry in the app. The only personal data we ever touch is the email you use at checkout, and Stripe holds that, not us.
1. Who we are
Write On is a macOS voice-to-text application operated by Ryan Anselman, a sole proprietor based in Englewood, Colorado, USA. You can reach us at support@write-on.app.
2. How the app works
Write On runs a speech-recognition model directly on your Mac's Neural Engine. When you dictate, your microphone audio is processed locally, in memory, and discarded. It is never written to disk and never transmitted anywhere. Transcripts are stored only on your Mac, encrypted at rest with AES-256. We could not read them if we wanted to — they never leave your machine.
The app makes exactly two kinds of network requests, both one-time or optional:
- Model download (first launch): the app fetches its speech model (~450 MB) from a public model repository once. No personal data is sent — it is a plain file download.
- Update checks: the app periodically asks write-on.app whether a newer version exists (standard Sparkle updates). This sends ordinary request metadata (IP address, app version), nothing more.
There are no accounts, no sign-in, and no analytics or telemetry in the app.
3. What data we collect
Purchase data
When you buy a license, payment is processed by Stripe. Stripe collects your email address and payment details; we never see or store your card information. Your license key embeds the email you used at checkout — that is what personalizes it. Stripe's handling of your data is governed by their privacy policy.
Website analytics
This website uses Plausible, a cookie-less, privacy-respecting analytics service that records aggregate page views only. No cookies, no cross-site tracking, no personal profiles. The app itself contains no analytics at all.
Support email
If you email us, we keep the correspondence so we can help you. That's it.
4. What we don't collect
- We never receive your audio. It is processed on your Mac and discarded.
- We never receive your transcripts. They exist only on your Mac, encrypted.
- We do not sell data to anyone — we don't have data to sell.
- We do not use your data to train AI models — ours or anyone else's.
- We do not run advertising, retargeting pixels, or behavioral trackers.
5. Third parties
The complete list of parties involved in running Write On:
- Stripe — payment processing and receipts (your email and payment details)
- Cloudflare — generates your license key immediately after checkout (processes your checkout session, stores nothing)
- Hostinger — hosts this website (ordinary request metadata)
- Plausible — cookie-less website analytics (aggregate counts)
- Hugging Face — hosts the public speech model the app downloads on first launch (ordinary request metadata)
6. Data retention
Purchase records live in Stripe for as long as tax and accounting laws require. Support emails are kept as long as they're useful for helping you. Everything else — audio, transcripts, usage — never existed on our side to begin with.
7. Your rights
Wherever you live (including GDPR and CCPA jurisdictions), you can email support@write-on.app to access, correct, export, or delete what little data exists about you. In practice that means your Stripe purchase record and any support correspondence.
8. Security
Transcripts are encrypted at rest on your Mac with AES-256. This website is served over TLS. License keys are cryptographically signed and verified on your Mac, offline. The most privacy-preserving architecture is the one where the data never leaves your machine — that is the architecture.
9. Children
Write On is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will delete it.
10. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy in a material way, we will post the change here at least 14 days before it takes effect. The current version is always at write-on.app/privacy.
